Toujeo (glargine insulin) – this insulin has a strength of 300 units per ml so is 3 times the concentration of other insulin in Australia. It is given once a day and lasts for at least 24 hours. It should not be confused with regular Lantus which has a strength of 100 units per ml. Toujeo is given for safety by a disposable pen only. Toujeo gives a slower, steadier glucose profile especially during the night. This can be useful and you can use it as a tool for reflection. Keeping a record of the times you eat, your symptoms and physical activity can help you identify triggers for your symptoms. If you experience high blood sugar after a cortisone injection, talk to your endocrinologist about the best way to lower it. If you take insulin, you may need to increase your dose and monitor your blood sugar more closely for a few days. The dose will vary with the condition of the patient. Enough is given to overcome the shortage of glucose. OVERDOSE As glucose may be used in medical emergencies, the injection may be given by paramedical personnel such as ambulance or nursing staff.
