About this deal
Oakley and Ava meet one night at Oakley’s going away party as he transitions to the minor leagues. Oakley isn’t in the party mood, and Ava had just caught her boyfriend cheating. They end up talking for hours before going their separate ways. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.
Unfortunately, this book felt like reading multiple unfinished ideas. The synopsis was misleading. I’m not sure what trope to categorize this under and there were way too many things going on that didn’t go anywhere: I never expected to see her again, but now she’s here in this new city, with ties to my new team, and I don’t think I’m strong enough to fight against her pull.Oakley & Ava are adorable, loved them. I really appreciated that there wasn’t a third act breakup. I love when an issue arises, and the couple works through it together.
I’ve never been interested in dating, not when all of my spare time is spent at the rink, perfecting my craft. There’s no time for distractions. I can’t afford them.Oakley and Ava's story was sweet. I really liked both characters and their friend group, but for some reason this one was just missing something for me. I can't put my finger on it. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to love it. Despite everything I said I wouldn’t do, I can’t seem to stay away from him. But dating a future NHL player isn’t the life I imagined for myself, and as things keep going wrong, I’m starting to wonder if maybe the best-made plans aren’t always the ones you expect. I think I’ve made a mistake by not being more honest with you,” he starts, his voice no more than a husky whisper.
Hanna Cowen takes the reader behind the scenes and gives them a glimpse of what it is like for an NHL player. Maddox has been through a lot throughout his career, especially regarding the draft, finding the best team, and making a name for himself outside his father, who was also an NHL legend. He will do anything it takes to secure a contract with his team. On the other hand, Braxton is willing to do whatever it takes to gain Maddox’s trust and forgiveness for what happened years ago. And if a fake girlfriend is what Maddox needs, she is willing to commit to it. But as expected, the faking concept does not last long since the two have a strong connection that causes them pain when they separate. As a reader, you will enjoy seeing them forced to work through their issues and give each other a second chance at love and relationship.I loved Oakley sm. Hannah writes obsessive men perfectly. And AVA!!!!! Her journey? I loved it. She’s adopted and is dealing with the dynamics between finding her biological mom and how that impacts her and her family. The emotions I felt while reading were 🥹
