In the real world, lens defects do not exist in isolation with spherical aberration and spherochromatism generally found, at least to some degree, along with axial CA. Autofocus was quite a pleasant experience with the Leica 24-70mm, and as a bit of a teaser to our comparison to the Sigma lens, I found that every aspect of Leica’s lens responded faster than Sigma’s on the SL2. Leica told us that it expected performance to be better with a Leica to Leica interaction, and while I admit I wasn’t quite sure I believed that then, I certainly believe it now. The two Sigma lenses perform similarly, with the Art having slightly less barrel distortion between 24mm and 28mm and slightly more pincushion from 35mm to 70mm. However, it’s only likely to be noticeable above ±0.5% with linear picture elements running parallel and close to the edge of the frame.

Image quality takes on a noticeable improvement at f/4 and again at f/5.6 where this lens is quite sharp across the frame. Best performance can be provided due to a large-aperture zoom. When looking more closely at the results, we can see that Sigma has gone to great lengths to achieve a more consistent level of sharpness, particularly wide-open at f/2.8. Even so, while the Art series lens consistently beats both the earlier EX model and the pricier Nikkor lens, we noticed some astigmatism (where the horizontal and vertical acutance lines aren’t always close) at 24mm, and sharpness levels drop at 70mm. A shoulder strap is not provided/available for this model, but an approximately 1.75" (44mm) belt loop is.
If you only have one lens or can only take one lens with you, this focal length range might be the ideal choice. The Sony option, without the need for an adapter, would be expected to perform better from AF and frame rate perspectives.

Sometimes I can easily and accurately describe the image sharpness a lens delivers in a couple of sentences and this usually reflects excellent image sharpness being delivered – or at least consistency over the focal length range.The visual similarities have led to speculation that this is just a re-housed Sigma lens, and while this is certainly a discussion worth having, we think we’ll save that for a separate “ PetaPixel Compares” story. For now, we’ll focus on the merits of the Leica lens alone. Even if the optics are the same as within the Sigma lens, the Leica version does have a slight advantage in the durability department that comes from having a metal housing.
